Bi weekly, we spotlight digital creators who are making the difference and helping people overcome a problem. Are you a digital creator constantly helping others solve a particular problem? We want to talk to you too, Fill this form to get started.
With many years of experience in the media, Toyin Ganiyu understood the importance of putting yourself out there, but when she finally started building her own personal brand, she realized that there were more people who needed help in this area, and she created a course to guide people in putting themselves out there on social media.
We talk about her journey and how she’s currently helping people build amazing personal brands.
It’s great to have you here, Toyin. Let’s talk about what you do.
My name is Oluwatoyin Ganiyu. I am a content creator, writer, and film producer. One of my recent films is a short YouTube movie I co-produced titled “Monitoring Spirits” and I am also currently working on a web series titled “House Hunting Lucy”. I have worked as a radio and TV presenter, and while I am not shy, I am introverted.
Nice! Is there a correlation between what you do and why you created your digital product?
I have worked in the media for a long time now, but I have always found it difficult to put myself out there, and I realized that there are a lot of people who genuinely want to put themselves out there, but they are finding it difficult to do so.
Why do you think people find it difficult to put themselves out there?
There are various reasons. For some, it could be not knowing what to post, not knowing where to get inspiration, worrying about how other people will perceive the content, and other times, it’s just that people don’t know how to go about it.
For me, I have always known how important making yourself visible is, and the delay was because, due to the different things I do, I wanted to figure out what my message would be. I didn’t want it all over the place.
Once I was sure of this, I started putting out content on Medium. I found it a lot easier than making audio and videos, plus the medium community is very supportive.
After a while, I started repurposing this content for Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter. I currently have a LinkedIn weekly newsletter for creators.
At a point, I realized I could help others put themselves out there too because I had done it and I had created the blueprint for it.
From your experience, what do you think are the benefits of building your personal brand?
There are a lot, but the most important benefit is attracting the kind of people you want. Building your personal brand puts you in the right community and connects you with the right people.
The thing with putting yourself out there is that it gets easier when you understand the people you want to reach and, most importantly, the stories you want to tell. This is what I help people figure out.
Let’s talk about your first digital product.
I created it this year in March. It’s titled “Putting yourself out there using social media” and it is currently hosted on skillshare.
It wasn’t really expensive to create. I was already putting out content around the topic, so I brought the articles together and did a little more research for the course. As for production, I partnered with a friend to produce it.
Need Help Creating Your First Digital Product?
Join over 60 digital creators to take our comprehensive beginner course. This course contains everything you need to get started.
What kind of results will your students get that would make you feel fulfilled?
The ultimate goal for me is to see students that have gone through my course get rid of their insecurities and be more confident about putting themselves out there effortlessly.
The people that have taken the course so far have made a lot of progress in deciding the right platform for themselves and showing up more consistently.
What was your first sale like? How did you feel?
I have always known that there are people out there who need this guide, so I was confident about putting it out, but the first sale made me very excited.
I can already tell the kind of tweaks I need to make for my next digital product.
Really, what will your next digital product be?
I have an ebook in the works, currently at the editing stage specifically for content creators just starting out, and a Put Yourself Out There virtual bootcamp. I am really excited about the Bootcamp because, with it, I’ll be able to monitor students’ progress in real-time. I believe people can do a lot better with real-time guidance and encouragement from other people.
Every day during the Bootcamp, we’ll talk about something and then everyone can go ahead and implement it, plus they will have a community of each other motivating and cheering them on.
Basically, the bootcamp is to make sure they get all the support they need and keep them accountable. I really can’t wait.
