“And there are people who will stand at your corner and convince you to stand up for another round no matter what” – Pete Wentz
Entrepreneurship isn’t a journey to be embarked upon alone. To thrive in it, you need to have a network of people who will ensure your dreams come to life. These people are at your corner, cheering you on as you take steps towards your goals, wiping the sweat off your brows, inspiring you to be the very best version of yourself and the successful entrepreneur you ought to be.
Check out these categories below and pick a few people – for your corner – to help you move forward and succeed in your entrepreneurial journey.
The Informant
Call them the ‘insider’ and you wouldn’t be wrong. This set of people have inside information regarding just about everything. You would be amazed at the amount of knowledge they have about anything relating to what you need. When you need to know the latest concerning the stock market, or the metrics to measure your brand awareness or social media success, these people will be there to share their knowledge with you. Your network needs an informant.
The Cheerleaders
Remember that friend who is only visible when things are smooth, but disappears at the slightest bump? Those friends should not be in your corner. These people have nothing to offer you and your network should be rid of them as quickly as you can.
Being an entrepreneur isn’t child’s play. There are days the road will be tough and you would feel like throwing in the towel. It is in these moments your cheerleaders will uplift you with their positive words and actions. When you lack the strength to carry on, they will shine a light on your path with their encouraging and affirmative words. And at every milestone you attain, they will celebrate your wins. Every entrepreneur deserves to have a cheerleader in their corner.
The Mentor
A mentor is someone who has relevant knowledge of your industry. Typically, he or she has been there, done that, and seen it all. With a mentor, you are guaranteed knowledge not gained in books, but gained in firsthand experience, which is essential in today’s world. Network opportunities, valuable connections, timely pieces of advice, multi perspectives are some of the things you will gain when you have a mentor in your corner.
Consider a mentor as someone who will hold you by the hands and help you navigate your entrepreneurial journey. Through every storm or success, he or she will there be guiding you on the best route to reach your destination and boosting your confidence along the way.
The Role Model
A role model is similar to a mentor as they both serve the same purpose of inspiring you to greater heights. The slight difference is that your role model does not have to be in the same industry as you are. They can be in business, family, or people in your life generally, a teacher, someone you follow on social media, an aunt or neighbour you admire so much for their tenacity and strong will towards life.
From your role model, you can glean wisdom to help you on your journey as an entrepreneur. Look out for the techniques that helped them get to where they are, and apply them to your business.
The Listener
You need that person who will offer you their shoulders when your chips are down and listen to you pour your heart out. The listener is someone you can trust with your deepest concerns and fears, even with your silly thoughts, without being judged.
Every entrepreneur should have that person who is available easy to talk to you and isn’t a tell-tale.
The Realist
This person gives it to you the way it is – straight-up without mincing words. With the realist, there are no sugar-coated or flamboyant words to boost your pride. An entrepreneur needs a person who keeps it real, real with your talents and skills, real about your products and services, real with your resources – you need to be sure you have enough to survive your entrepreneurial journey.
