“Thank God It’s Friday! Now I can go to the cinemas to watch that movie with Chinenye and Daniel.”
Be honest, would you really go to the movies, or would you be in a corner typing away at your computer, busy attending to work?
Hey, do yourself a favour this weekend and take a break from work. The weekend is a time for you to unplug from work, and no matter how demanding your job is, you should be able to differentiate between the week and the weekend. You’ve worked diligently during the weekday- now it’s time to be fully present to enjoy the activities during the weekend – trust me, it wouldn’t be cool to have to sneak out amid a movie with your loved ones to check your work email.
So are you looking for ways to have a good time this weekend? We’ve got you!
Try these tips:
- Make a plan
Just as you would plan your Mondays or any other day of the week, plan your weekends too. Draw up a list of things you would love to do and schedule a time around them. You will find yourself binging on a movie or lazily sleeping through the weekend if you do not map out a plan for it, and then voila, it’s Monday!
Take a break from your computer and other work-related devices, and truly leave work at work. Distance yourself from the work environment, set aside time to live fully without gadgets, and do something different. If your phone is connected to your work email, turn it off for some hours. Just don’t work.
- Put fun in your schedule
Play. Let out your inner child and add some fun to your life. Take a memory walk and recall all the fun things you did as a child and redo them. Play the Ludo, jigsaw puzzles, set up a bouncy castle, and go bouncing! Hang out with kids – they sure know how to play. Take the chance the weekend offers you and enjoy yourself to the fullest.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing” – George Bernard Shaw.
- Get active
Pick up your running shoes, stretch your body, and go for a run. Not a fan of running? Try skipping, or get your groove on with some dancing – dancing is a whole-body workout that will improve your physical fitness and mental health.
The weekend is the time to make up for all those times you skipped your sessions in the gym, don’t ignore it.
Can you remember how many hours of sleep you had during the week? 4, 5, or the healthy dose of 7-9 hours? Did you even get some day-time naps? Most likely not. A good night’s sleep is very essential to your health; it can boost your productivity, concentration levels, and general performance. Get enough sleep this weekend.
Remember that movie you couldn’t watch because of your busy schedules during the week? Now is the time to watch it. Ring up some friends and plan a movie night. Plan an intimate dinner date with your significant other or treat the entire family to some ice cream at a newly discovered restaurant. Attend some owambes, eat Jollof rice, and meet new people. It’s time to chop the life of your head. After all, you cannot come and die.
Working on the weekend can be tempting, but then, life is too short to spend all of it working.
Go get some fun!
