Do you remember how you swore this year that you were going to be more deliberate in ensuring your body and mind gets the necessary care and love it deserves? But then comes Friday and you’re already burnt out and stressed – out goes all your resolutions of self care and then comes the dreadful Monday.
Self-care is a general term that describes everything you do deliberately for your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. It sounds simple, but then, it isn’t that simple. Most times, we are encumbered with so many responsibilities, especially at the workplace and home that we’ll do anything to switch places with babies who don’t have a care of anything in the world.
To practice self-care, you don’t have to be a member of the chop life gang. Below are 5 tips that won’t tear your pocket:
-
Sleep and nap often
Sleep is fundamental to the body’s total well-being. According to scientists, adults need a total of 7-9 hours of sleep each night, anything lesser than the recommended hours can cause negative health consequences. Get your body to sleep by creating a sleep routine – a hot bath, light food, a book, dim lights, cool music, and the likes – that lulls your mind to a restful state. You would wake up feeling better and grateful too.
-
Have an in-house spa
Indulge yourself in some of your best beauty products and spend time pampering yourself. Light your scented candles, put on some soothing music, and let the music and sweet fragrances soothe your body and mind. Check YouTube for some DIY spa sessions and pedicures too.
-
Cook healthy meals
This is the time to flesh out that recipe you’ve been trying to make, pull out your pans and get cooking. Your diet plays a significant role in your self-care, therefore, it is essential to feed yourself with healthy nutritious meals that build and nourish the body. Do away with extremely unhealthy foods that contain high calories.
-
Don’t work
Leave work at work, yes! If you’ve earlier made a schedule for the weekend, clear it. Close the laptop, put your phone on airplane mode and spend some more time relaxing in bed – you could even order breakfast so you don’t have to cook. It’s weekend after all, you’re allowed to be lazy.
-
Practice gratitude
Most times, we focus so much on the negatives that we forget the goodness of life that surrounds us – good health, family, friends, good job, achievements, promotions, and all the positive things that make life easier for us. Cherishing and reliving the positive memories that life has blessed us with will help you achieve the self-care you need.
Your body and mind need a lot of care it can get. Not getting enough care is the reason you experience sleep disorders and fatigue, and feel like you’re in a mental fog all the time. So, make a commitment to get enough self care this weekend – even this year.
