There’s a high chance you spend more on the weekends than you spend during the weekdays. You’re not to be blamed off course; you’ve worked hard during the week and this is the only time you’ve got to catch up with family, hang out with friends at your favourite spots, go to that owambe you’ve been planning all week, and just have fun all the way. It’s just two days after all, and you cannot come and die!
Weekends have a way of draining your wallets – not with all that heavy spending that went into having a fun-filled weekend. Remember how you splurged on alcohol and food at the restaurant, sprayed some notes on the musician after spending almost a 100k on asoebi, and then on Monday, you sadly realise that the fun was expensive. Overly expensive.
But you can have a weekend that wouldn’t drill holes in your pockets and still have fun too. Well, not so much fun though. The idea is to keep your wallet safe from weekend offenders. Here are some tips to help you save more without breaking the budget:
Eat-in, not out
Instead of going out to eat, you can make your meals at home. Eating homemade meals affords you so much more: your meals are safe from all that extra sodium and fat typical of processed foods; you can control the ingredients put in your food; control your food portions and it saves time. Think of the cost too. The restaurants need to make more profit, and you – the customer is – helping them make more profit when you could be saving all that money for yourself.
Prep the next week’s meals
Now, you don’t have to bother about setting money aside for eating out during the week. You could use the weekend to prep your next week’s meals. Visit the nearest food market closest to you, get cooking, and stock your fridge with your delicious homemade meals. You are certain of healthy meals all through the week, and the numerous benefits as mentioned above.
Clean your apartment
Cleaning is a good way to exercise and this might just be the perfect time to clean your space. You could even throw in some renovations. Dust, sweep, vacuum, and mop the floors. Clean out your wardrobe too, and give out some clothes you’ve not worn in a long while; you could even thrift some and make some cool cash for yourself. Put on some cool jams that will get you bobbing your heads to the music as you clean. You wouldn’t even notice how much time you’ve spent making your house tidy.
Listen to a podcast
You don’t feel like cleaning? That’s fine. You could clean next weekend. Put your phone to some good use by listening to a podcast or two. It’s the best way to maximise your weekend without spending a dime – except maybe on data – particularly on weekends. Here’s a list of our top business podcasts to help you thrive this year.
Read a book
Reading is a good thing to do during the weekend and there are a lot of good books out there to open your mind and take you on a journey. Check out your local bookstore closest to you, or better still, visit the local library in your neighbourhood for some free books. And if you don’t feel like stepping out, download some reading apps like Okadabooks, Aldiko, Audible, and so on.
You could also make a list of weekend activities that cause you to spend more and cut down on them. Remember that the idea is for you to spend less and save more money during the weekends.
